Florida Reef Labs™ Phytoplankton Algae Disk (Petri Dish):

Ready to use or store live inoculated phytoplankton. You can store these in a cool room temperature dark area (best to place in a dark cool place) and use within 4 months. Our disks provide the option of starting a fresh culture anytime. If you do not want to maintain cultures continuously, just want to restart a fresh culture every couple months or if a culture ever has an issue you can startup a fresh one from disk anytime.

Process:

Add sterilized salt water (typical culture water you would use to culture phytoplankton) in petri dish so all algae is covered.

Place under light or on windowsill with sun light for 24 hours

After 24 hours take a sterile cotton swab lightly rub it around disk to release phytoplankton cells (being careful not to disturb gel, but know the gel will not hurt culture if gets transferred)

Pour into your new sterile culture vessel.

Ensure to follow proper grow procedures depending on your species of Phytoplankton you are working with (ie: aeration, light schedule, F/2 dosage) and in 7-10 days you will have a culture ready to harvest and/or split to make more; You can easily start 1-gallon cultures with these disks.

Our phytoplankton is used for reef tanks, copepods, rotifers, artemia, clams, oysters, larval/brine shrimp and more.

Tetraselmis Phytoplankton: is known to be rich in lipids, DHA, EPA, and arginine.

Nannochloropsis Phytoplankton: is known to have astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, spirulina, canthaxanthin. It is also rich in EPA (30%), Omega 3 (42%).
